Caillebotte, Guistave, 1877, Paris on a rainy day, Oil Painting, 212.2 x 276.2 cm, Art Insittute of Chicago, (Source: http://www.artic.edu/aic)

In addition to 2 point perspective, which will be discussed next week, this painting makes use of all of the depth cues we have discussed this week: foreshortening, overlapping, diminishing size, vertical location, convergence, atmospherics (aerial perspective) and, textural change. Interestingly, according to an explanatory text on the Art Institute of Chicago web site, Caillebotte's depiction has exaggerated the height of the buildings and the spaciousness of the intersection, creating a wide-angle view of the fashionable area where the artists family owned property.
