Van Gogh's frentetic use of line here is characteristic of a style that came to be known as 'expressionism'. In this style emotive affect is dominant to empirical observation, yet this scene surely still quite representational. However, once again, from the broad range of artworks that may be considered expressionist in style, van Gogh's personal style of line work is unmistakeable.
